Father and Daughter – Fairmount Cemetery – Jetmore, Hodgeman County, Kansas
There is a headstone in Fairmont Cemetery which reads:
William Blakeley Died July 28, 1882 42 Y. 4 M. Age 40
Matilda Monroe Dau. Of W. & M.A. Blakeley Died Jan 28 1889 Age 22 Y. 4M. 30 Day
William was born in 1843 in Northern Ireland. At the age of 17, he married Mary Ann Craig (b. 1840). Two sons and one daughter, Matilda, were born in Scotland before the Blakeley’s came to America in 1862.
An additional seven children were born to the couple. The Blakeley family came to Hodgeman County in 1878 and settled on a claim northwest of Jetmore. Two years later, William passed away at the age of 42. Mary Ann stayed on the farm and was able to make final proof on the homestead in 1893.
Matilda was born in Scotland and came to America at the age of five. On April 18, 1885 she married Price Vernon Monroe at the Great Western Hotel in Dodge City. Two daughters were born to the couple, Josephine and Mary Pearl. Matilda died in 1889 and is buried with her father in Fairmount Cemetery.
Josephine and Mary Pearl were ages four and two when Matilda passed away. They were left in the care of their grandmother; Mary Ann Blakeley as Price Monroe went to Colorado to find work.
The rest of the story: The second daughter of William and Mary Ann was Eliza Blakeley was born in 1870. She married John C. Walter and is buried in Silent Land Cemetery, Spearville, Ford County, Kansas.
